Thank you for helping me to achieve results way beyond my wildest expectations! My results still hang proudly on the fridge and every time I look at them I feel euphoric! You are an absolute star! (Pupil)

St Bede’s Lit 8 Lang 7 (2022)

Rosie has tutored both of my children in English over 4 years. She is patient, intuitive and enthusiastic. Both children really enjoyed and benefited from learning with Rosie, and she helped my son get a 7 and 8 English GCSE. Thank you!

St Bede’s Lang 8 Lit 7 ( 2022)

Rosie first came into our lives when our son started extra classes with her six years ago. He struggled badly with English and has since been diagnosed with dyslexia. Rosie was hugely accommodating in teaching a boy who genuinely disliked English and being taught it. She was fun and dynamic in her approach and willing to try different methods to engage with him and get the best out of him. Her incredible patience, professionalism and thoughtfulness was instrumental in reengaging him with education. He is now fully engaged and has a variety of coping mechanisms to help with his learning but more importantly, he is happy to learn English and reads (occasionally) for fun.

As a result of the success Rosie achieved with our son we asked her to provide GCSE specific tutoring to our elder daughter for years 9, 10 and 11. Rosie has been accommodating throughout. She is thoughtful in her approach and once again engaged our daughter fully in learning and developing her English skills specifically for the GCSE coursework and examination. Rosie has added value to our daughter and we have just received the news that she has received the required grade for her to enter Reigate College to study her chosen subjects. This would not have been possible without Rosie’s input. Her teaching style is relaxed, but targeted. She has got the best out of our daughter and has done so whilst keeping a smile on her face. we are all very grateful and recommend Rosie without hesitation.

Rosie Anne has supported both my children for many years through to successful GCSE results. Both children were diagnosed as dyslexic during their transition into secondary school and struggled with confidence in their own ability. I firmly believe it is her calm, understanding, logical and supportive approach which enabled them to achieve their true potential.

Both children tell me Rosie Anne’s tuition helped develop and fine tune their skills, this increasing their self-confidence and ability to achieve results they were proud of.

For my GCSE English Language and Literature I achieved grade 7. Rosie Anne’s tutoring helped me analyse text in much greater depth and detail than before, and additionally construct convincing arguments and answer exam questions in order to get top marks.

( former st Bede’s pupil)

This pupil arrived a few years ago from mainland China. I have been helping him to prepare for his GCSEs in June 2019.This is what his mother has to say:

” I really appreciated Rosie’s professional English teaching skills. She helped my son at RGS to get amazing results: English Language GCSE A (grade 8) and English Literature A* ( grade 9) – even though English is his 2nd language. So fantastic! Thank you very much!!!

(GCSE pupil, 2019, Reigate Grammar School, attending St Paul’s School for 6th Form.)

My daughter saw Rosie weekly for nearly 6 months in the run up to her GCSEs and received help with both the Literature and Language components. And thank goodness she did! We attribute an astonishing pair of results to these weekly sessions. Level 9 in Literature and Level 8 in Language – a jump of 3 grades respectively from the mock exams.

A transformation occurred within this period not only in the elevation of her writing style, but also a blossoming of a love of poetry, and the sudden ‘clicking’ with Shakespeare. More importantly my daughter previously had zero confidence with the subject, believed she was hopeless at it and fundamentally disliked it. Rosie enabled her to believe in herself and this manifested itself in her writing and appreciation of the set texts. She now even reads for pleasure – something I never thought I’d see!

(GCSE pupil, 2019, Reigate Grammar School)

<We sought Anne’s help for our son after a poor GCSE mock result in English. She had previously helped friends and was highly recommended.

Our son found her so helpful, and she completely turned him around in a fairly short space of time… so much so that from a fear of actually failing English, he scored an 8 in June this year.

Anne is a superb teacher, and really helped our son’s confidence in himself too, so we would not hesitate to recommend her.

(GCSE pupil, 2019, Reigate Grammar School)

“My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her lessons with you and found them very beneficial. You inspired her to think more creatively and to develop her writing skills. She was constantly surprised by your imagination and ideas for stories, and felt able think more “outside the box” to come up with her own ideas as a result. My daughter struggles with English and a dyslexia diagnosis just a year before her GCSEs left her questioning her ability. She felt much more confident as a result of your help and the structures and ideas you gave her. She was absolutely thrilled to get a 9 in her English Language GCSE, especially having got a 5 in her mock exam.”

(GCSE pupil, 2019, Reigate Grammar School)

Rosie Anne is an inspirational teacher. She has the ability to get alongside a child and meet them where they are at, cultivating an imagination they never knew they had. She gets alongside them in a non-confrontational and non-judgemental manner, helping them to feel anything is possible and lifting their self-esteem. She has the ability to engage with the most challenging of children!

She has taught both of our sons, preparing them for GCSE, and both of them did far better than we were expecting – undoubtedly helped by Rosie Anne’s fantastic teaching. Every penny we paid has been money well spent and you get so much more from Anne than an hour of teaching a week.

We cannot recommend her highly enough.

A real confidence booster!

This GCSE pupil came to me in the run-up to exams for some pretty intensive revision sessions. This is what his mother has to say:

“Rosie engaged and motivated my son from the first lesson- a remarkable feat as he had had a tumultuous year and lost interest in school. Not only did she make the Literature accessible and engaging, she also boosted his confidence. After disastrous mocks ( he got a 2 for Literature), he ended up with a 5 in the exams and a 6 for English Language.

I can’t recommend Rosie enough and my only regret is that he didn’t start with her sooner.

He is now delighted to be off to Reigate Sixth Form College.”

“Thank you for the fantastic English lessons which not only gave Ruby her out-of-catchment place at Nonsuch, but also a double 9 in her GCSE English Language and Literature GCSEs. You were ( and continue to be) an inspiration and hands down the best English teacher ever!”

9th time lucky!

‘A huge thanks to Rosie for tutoring Max in his English GCSE. after 8 failed exam attempts we were beginning to think a pass was unattainable and knew we had to do something different. Then a friend suggested Rosie. What a turnaround! With only a few weeks until the exam Rosie was very accommodating and managed to improve my son’s English techniques so finally on the 9th attempt he passed his GCSE. Thanks :)

(Please note that all lessons were conducted by FaceTime and e-mail due to the geographical distance between us.)

Thank you for everything you taught me. I achieved academic scholarships to both Reigate Grammar School and Caterham School. Without your teaching I doubt that I would have learned to enjoy and work hard in my English lessons. When you first started teaching me I despised writing of any kind, but through your encouragement I began writing short stories. Since then I have written dozens of short stories and poems, as well as starting to write a novel.I have had several pieces published. I would like to thank you for showing me the joy of writing. No other teacher has ever inspired me as much, or made such a difference to my life.’

Rosie is a delightful teacher who is encouraging and always willing to help you in every way possible. She was able togged me from a ‘C’ in my mock to an A* in my GCSE, which I never expected to happen!’

( Reigate Grammar School)

“My daughter used to find English very hard but with all of Rosie’s help and support she’s learnt to love English and exceeded her target grades in her GCSE exams! She was predicted 4/5s but achieved 6/7s. ”

(Pupil from Rosebery, Epsom, now at Glynn)

“My daughter was not enjoying English and needed extra support in achieving the grades required for sixth form.Through Rosie Anne’s enthusiasm and careful teaching K changed from a rather reluctant English student into one who enjoyed the lessons, was confident in her abilities and exceeded GCSE expectations.

My daughter said that ‘ Rosie Anne was great to work with, always helpful and made the subject very interesting. I went up loads of grades.’ “

( Lady Margaret School, Parsons Green)

… you gave her a great start in English and she has gone on to achieve A*s in both her Language and Literature GCSE!

(City of London Freeman’s)

Rosie made a huge difference to Amelia’s grasp of her English studies. She gave her the space, time and guidance to break down the scripts she was learning and really understand them. Amelia was feeling rather lost in her English studies before her tuition with Rosie but soon became confident and enthusiastic; she wanted to learn. We were all very pleased with A’s GCSE results and would recommend Rosie as an excellent English tutor.

(Amelia has now decided to continue with English at A Level)

(St Bede’s)

I cannot recommend Anne highly enough. My son, who has never been keen on school work, grew to love English with Anne and his written work across all subjects improved significantly. Predicted to not do well at GCSE level, he is now the proud owner of 9 GCSEs! Thank you Anne for your unrelenting encouragement and support.’

(Parent of GCSE pupil, St Bede’s)

At the end of Year 10 I was predicted a B in both English Language and Literature. Having gone for only a term I received A’s in my mock exams and my teacher and I noticed a huge improvement in my writing and analysis of the texts, thanks to Mrs Coombes’ tuition. Having just sat my GCSE exams to my delight I achieved an A in the Language and an A* in Literature. An inspiring tutor and I wish I had only found her sooner. From her mother: Both my daughters are tutored by Mrs C – one for GCSE and the other for 11+. “The elder is mildly dyslexic and reads little. Mrs C definitely helped her to an A* in Literature ( with full marks in poetry) and an A (nearly A*)in Language after only a year’s help. She was predicted 2 Bs by her school. School said her progress was miraculous! My girls insist on continuing their lessons although their exams are over at present. Just having a discussion with Mrs C does them good and they are fond of her too. She is the best English teacher I have come across by far. I wouldn’t mind learning poetry analysis myself! My younger daughter is very shy, but is confident and assertive after a lesson. Both girls came out of lessons very animated and stimulated. They admire and respect her.

(16 year old, Reigate Grammar School)

“My son first went to Rosie in the late summer of year 10. We had lived abroad for 6 years of his schooling. He had got out of the habit of reading in English and generally through uninspiring English teachers at school, lost his passion for English. Well, the year that Rosie had with Woody enabled him to confidently and enthusiastically attack any English task given to him at school. He looked forward to his lessons with Rosie and found her to be enlightened and passionate in her subject with a very refreshing interest in his success. She thoroughly researched new areas and provided invaluable support to him to pass both his English Literature and Language GCSE’s. Lastly, if it hadn’t been for these lessons with Rosie, I am not sure if he would have passed his English, so, thank you Rosie!”

(GCSE pupil from Box Hill)

You have given me real confidence in writing about poetry (Isaac, 15)

Our son Henry started having lessons with Rosie at the start of year 10 and we saw an immediate improvement. He was in a low English set at school and his teachers advised that he aim for the foundation papers and even then predicted D’s. With Rosie’s help and encouragement, Henry soon became far more engaged and actually started to enjoy English. He quickly moved up a set and did well in his Controlled assessments and his teachers were confident he could pass the higher exam. He approached his final exams with confidence and gained two grade B’s, which we were all very happy with. We were also delighted to see the in the breakdown of the different papers and assessments that he had achieved an A* and two A’s along with B’s and C’s. We are in no doubt that it was Rosie’s teaching and enthusiasm for English that helped Henry make such great progress. Thank you Rosie.

(GCSE pupil from St Bede’s)

My son struggled with his English GCSE. His inability to pass the exam caused his confidence to drop. Rosie’s sense of fun and support, together with providing him with a strategy and getting him to believe in himself, enabled him not only to pass but to achieve a ‘C’ grade. Thank you.

( A Level student from Rosebery School, Epsom)

Rosie has been an excellent tutor for our daughter, just when she needed that extra confidence and personal coaching. After a few sessions of targeted help before ‘A’ levels, we are convinced that Rosie’s expertise was a major contributor in increasing her predicted ‘C’ grade to a solid ‘B’.

“A big thank you to you for teaching my daughter iand preparing her for her 11+. You really did help her improve her English and we love how you tailor her lessons to make them interesting and enjoyable.”

“I have been meaning to email you just to let you know that my son is really enjoying English in school (and of course he always enjoys your lessons). I think he is currently doing creative writing and loving it. Over the last two years I’ve noticed he is enjoying English much more and it’s all thanks to you. He certainly has more confidence with his approach to the subject which is reflected in his work and not just in English but other subjects that require structured answers. Fingers crossed he continues to build on this confidence and skills set.”

( Year 9 pupil, Reigate Grammar School)

‘My son started being tutored By Rosie Anne in Year 4 and the progress he has made has been phenomenal. He always struggled with his creative writing skills but with Rosie Anne’s help he started producing some outstanding work. His vocabulary became above average and this was commented on by his school teacher who noticed what brilliantly descriptive work he was producing. Rosie Anne also picked up that he had some dyslexia traits which led to him being formally assessed and then diagnosed.

I would not hesitate in recommending Rosie Anne as she has made such a difference to the work my son produces and subsequently his offer of a place at Ardingly College.

Thank you Rosie Anne for all your hard work and perseverance. It most definitely paid off! ‘

“We have certainly noticed that our son is more creative in his writing and his comprehension is getting there. He is definitely enjoying his English classes in school a lot more and he has said to me many a time that it is all down to you!

Thank you so much for your brilliant tutoring. Our son has really enjoyed your lessons – far more than he has enjoyed English at school! Your tutoring has been superb.

“My 10 year old daughter had tutoring with Rosie for one term in preparation for her 11+ exams. Rosie was able to encourage my daughter and give her a new enthusiasm for English. She helped her to develop a variety of techniques to make her writing more interesting and also gave her to skills to manage comprehension exercises. Rosie really helped prepare my daughter so that she knew what to expect from an 11+ entrance exam and as such she was well prepared on the day. I would highly recommend Rosie’s English tutoring.”

Rosie is a fantastic tutor.

Her creative flair engaged my 11-year-old son, who was not at all keen on reading and writing, and he really enjoyed his lessons with her. She taught him for a year. We had believed there may be some barriers to his writing skills for many years. Within a few weeks she diagnosed dyslexia, which was confirmed by an educational psychologist. Her experience enabled her to engage him with a learning style which suited him.

Our son has recently started at Dunottar School with far more confidence in his capability.

I would thoroughly recommend Rosie for her teaching, engagement with parents and loyalty to her students.

‘Rosie is an inspirational person and a la crème de la crème English teacher. We entrusted her with nurturing our 10-year-old son in preparation for his 11 plus examinations for some of the best and most highly academic schools in England. After each lesson, our son would come out smiling and inspired and would say ‘she is really good’. Rosie’s energy and enthusiasm helped our son gain academic scholarships at Hampton School, Whitgift and St Paul’s. (One of these was a 100% scholarship!) He was also offered a place at RGS Guildford and was offered a place at Wilson’s Grammar School.’

(Academic Scholarships offered by Hampton School, St Paul’s and Whitgift)

My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her lessons with Mrs Coombes. I was worried that though Jemima was doing very well with the grammar and literacy lessons at school, she had lost all love of the English language. I knew Mrs Coombes from her time being Head at English at a local school and hoped that she would be able to revive Jemima’s passion and joy for reading and writing. After one lesson, I knew it was a huge success. Mrs Coombes has the great and rare skill of being able to enthuse her pupils, stretching and encouraging them to explore and understand words, their power and importance whilst still teaching them the necessary skills.

Guiding us through to the 11+ entrance exams, Mrs Coombes understands what is needed for all of your choice schools and gives your child the knowledge, confidence and passion that makes all the difference in the selections.

It definitely worked for us as Jemima was offered Academic scholarships at both the secondary schools she applied to: St John’s Leatherhead and Reigate Grammar School. Just as importantly for me however, is the fact that Jemima is fast to pick up a pen and write a thought, an impression of a scene or even a silly poem or joke. She has been given back the English language beyond the limitations of SATS.

I would not hesitate to ask Mrs Coombes to help my son if the need arrives.

(11-year-old awarded Academic Scholarships at St John’s Leatherhead and Reigate Grammar School)

“Preparing our daughter for the 11 plus exams, we have noticed that she was lacking in English and we felt her level wouldn’t suffice for her to get her a place at Reigate Grammar School, her first choice school. Anne Coombes enabled our daughter to build her self-confidence and develop a clear understanding of what was required of her in English. She very quickly established rapport and trust which created an effective learning environment and allowed our daughter to gain the knowledge, experience and skills which were required to sit the exam.

Our aim was for our daughter to obtain a place at Reigate Grammar School: in fact, she was awarded an Academic Scholarship! The level of teaching, support and explanation was thorough, detailed and understandable. Our daughter enjoyed Creative Writing and Comprehension and felt inspired by Anne. We are very grateful to her and would have no hesitation in recommending her to any student. I would also recommend intensive lessons before the exams – we booked one lesson each day in the half term before the exams. It worked like magic.

Thank you once again, Anne! Loredana and Andrew Hobbs”

(11 year-old awarded an Academic Scholarship to Reigate Grammar School)

Rosie Anne is an outstanding English tutor. She makes English fun, which is especially important for boys. Jed’s English was average before he started tuition with Rosie. He sat entance exams for Caterham, Lingfield Notre Dame Reigate Grammar and Whitgift … and had offers from all four. I cannot rate her highly enough!

(11 year-old from Oakhyrst Grange, Caterham)

Mrs Coombes is a wonderful, inspiring and encouraging teacher. My daughter had completely lost confidence in herself when it came to English. With Mrs Coombes she rediscovered her enthusiasm for English and once again enjoys reading and writing. She isn’t overwhelmed anymore; she takes chances with her writing ( with impressive results) and she has a new confidence in her ability. Just what we had hoped for. Through fun and creative lessons, Mrs Coombes made entrance exams much less daunting and my daughter felt ready and confident about sitting them – and very happily she passed all of them.

Thank you.

(11 – old pupil)

I just wanted to say that we have seen a real enthusiasm develop in my daughter when it comes to reading and writing. She is pushing herself much more with a new confidence and belief that she can do it. Thank you – that is just what we had hoped for. Thank you.

(11 year old from Bramley School)

“Mrs Coombes is a real star – she has transformed my daughter’s love of English”

(from Chris M., Founding and Company Director of the Public Law Company)

I have just received my son’s grades for this half term. These have all moved up since last half term and his teacher has written a comment saying, “Excellent all round improvement and work in English. Well done!”

Thank you so much for all your help with him – it is obviously paying dividends!

(13 year-old pupil at Ewell Castle)

“He really does seem to have been enthused and has taken great effort and attention to detail with his work for you.’

(12 year-old from St Bede’s)

Thank you so much for all you are doing with I, she is starting to feel much more positive about school work again. She is quite motivated to finish tasks you have set her without my nagging, a minor miracle from where I

sit!

B was so inspired to write she came home and started on her writing task straight away. It is so lovely to see her happy about learning again. Thank you so much for all the inspiration and support you are giving her. It really is a gift!

Thank you for everything you’ve done for my daughter this last few weeks. There is a marked difference in her approach to work and I feel her confidence is returning.

(8-year old from Sandcross School)

Thank you.

‘I’ve always struggled with English and was just about managing a ‘C’ grade at best. I found Anne supportive and inspirational. I even began to enjoy poetry which I always thought was impossible! She gave me confidence in answering my questions. She worked me hard which paid off as I got an ‘A’ in my GCSE Literature and a ‘B’ in my Language.

(11 year-old scholarship pupil)

Thank you for everything you’ve done for my daughter this last few weeks. There is a marked difference in her approach to work and I feel her confidence is returning.

(8-year old from Sandcross School)

I feel that Mrs Coombes has developed my daughter and put some fun back in her learning and she enjoys

her classes each week and has made much progress and improvement to her work at school.

I just feel that this lady has so much to offer our children.
